A Sweet Slice of Texas Tradition: Texas Farm Credit Celebrates Watermelon Queen Lorelai Hill

There are few things sweeter than a Texas watermelon in season, but a recent Rio Grande Valley field visit came close.

Texas Farm Credit recently joined 2026 Texas Watermelon Queen Lorelai Hill in a watermelon field at Rio Fresh in San Juan, Texas, to celebrate Texas agriculture, the growers behind the crop and a tradition that has been helping tell the watermelon industry’s story for generations.

Lorelai, whose agricultural roots run deep in the Valley, serves as the official promotional ambassador for the Texas watermelon industry. Each year, the Texas Watermelon Association crowns a new Texas Watermelon Queen to visit farms, schools, grocery stores, festivals, industry events and media appearances, sharing the story of Texas-grown watermelons from the field to the family table.

For Texas Farm Credit, supporting the Queen Program is a natural fit, or maybe we should say, a one-in-a-melon opportunity. The association recently made a donation in support of the program, helping encourage young agricultural leaders while promoting the growers, shippers and families who keep Texas watermelon season rolling.

We’re honored to invest in the future of our farming communities and celebrate the hardworking growers who bring the sweetness of Texas watermelons from the field to families across our state.”

The visit was also a bright spotlight on the Rio Grande Valley, a region known for hardworking farmers, rich soil and strong agricultural legacy. Lorelai was joined by her father, Benjamin Hill, Farm Manager for Texas Farm Credit customer Rio Fresh, and Texas Farm Credit’s Mark Limon for photos among rows of Texas watermelons.

This year’s celebration carries even more meaning as 2026 is recognized as the International Year of the Woman Farmer, a global observance honoring the essential role women play across agriculture and food systems. From Lorelai’s leadership as Queen, to women helping farm and promote the Valley’s produce industry, the day was a fitting reminder that agriculture’s future is being shaped by dedicated leaders of every generation.

And while the crown may sparkle, the heart of the program is rooted in something even more lasting: connection. Through every field visit, school stop and community event, the Texas Watermelon Queen helps consumers see the people, pride and perseverance behind every harvest.
