Texas Farm Credit team members recently spent a day learning firsthand how reclaimed land can serve local communities in remarkable ways. Relationship Manager Tiffany Smith, Loan Administrator Stephanie Jones, and Organizational Development Specialist Robin McDaniel volunteered at the NRG Dewey Prairie Garden — a thriving community resource built on reclaimed land from the former NRG coal mine in Jewett, Texas.
Following their volunteer work, the group joined the Texas Mining and Reclamation Association (TMRA) during one of their teacher workshops to tour the reclamation process at the old mine site. They had the unique opportunity to see the Marion 8200 dragline — an enormous piece of earth-moving equipment — and to witness how careful reclamation efforts restore mined land so it blends seamlessly into the surrounding environment.
Today, the Dewey Prairie Garden stands as a shining example of this process, transforming former mining land into productive, beautiful spaces that support both local ecosystems and communities.
