Supporting Mental Health in Texas Agriculture
As May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, Texas Farm Credit remains committed to supporting both financial stability and mental well-being in Texas agriculture.
The realities of farming and ranching, including volatile markets, weather uncertainty, rising input costs and operational demands, can create significant rural stress. As a trusted provider of Texas agriculture lending, we recognize that financial conversations often overlap with personal challenges. That places us in a unique position to offer not just capital, but support and connection to helpful resources.
If you are navigating financial uncertainty, explore farm and ranch loan options or connect with a local expert.
“Rural communities face significant mental health disparities driven by various factors, including challenging economies,” said Texas Farm Credit CEO Mark Miller.
“Farmers are 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population, and nearly five percent of rural Americans have reported serious thoughts of suicide. We cannot sustain our farms, ranches and rural communities without first supporting the people who run them.”
Understanding Rural Stress in Texas Agriculture
Mental health challenges in rural communities, especially among agricultural producers, are significant and often underreported. Suicide rates in rural areas are twice as high as in urban areas, and farmers are 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide. Over the past 20 years, rural suicide rates have increased by 46 percent.
In 2023, 1 in 5 adults in rural America reported experiencing a mental illness, and nearly 5 percent reported serious thoughts of suicide. Studies also show that 60 percent of farmers meet the criteria for depression. Access to care remains a challenge, with many rural counties lacking mental health professionals.
The Reality Behind the Numbers
Behind every statistic is a person, a family and an operation working hard to keep going.
In agriculture, stress often builds gradually. A difficult season, rising input costs or market uncertainty can lead to longer hours, heavier financial pressure and tough decisions that affect both business and personal life. Farming and ranching do not always allow for stepping away at the end of the day. The work is constant, and so is the responsibility.
For many producers across Texas, these pressures are compounded by isolation. Rural communities are strong and connected, but distance can make it harder to access care or start conversations about mental health.
At Texas Farm Credit, we see how closely financial health and personal well-being are connected. That is why we encourage our customers to explore both financial solutions and mental health resources when challenges arise. Taking that first step toward support can make a meaningful difference.
