Why Should You Raise Brahman Cattle?
So you’ve bought your Texas ranch and are now deciding what cattle to populate it with.
With numerous breeds to choose from, it can be an overwhelming process to navigate. But thanks to its efficiency, hybrid vigor, and heat tolerance, Brahman cattle is likely a strong choice.
According to the American Brahman Association, the Brahman is the first beef cattle breed to develop in the U.S. And it still remains a top option for Texas cattle ranchers.
What are Brahman Cattle Good For?
Adaptability
Brahmans are very adaptive to various environmental and weather situations—a huge advantage for Texas ranchers who often have to contend with extreme temperatures and drought conditions.
Brahmans’ heat resistance is because of their thick, short, glossy hair coat that reflects the sun’s rays. During wintertime, they also grow a long, coarse protective hair covering to remain warm, even on some of the coldest days of the season.
One unique characteristic of this breed is their loose skin. But it’s not just a recognizable feature: it increases their bodies’ surface area, which helps them cool down faster. Brahman cattle can also sweat freely, unlike other breeds, which significantly contributes to their ability to withstand high temperatures.
Overall, Brahmans’ adaptability is one of their biggest strengths. They’re able to travel longer distances for water and feed, resist insects and external parasites, and can reproduce regularly, even in a stressful setting.
Maternal Ability
While many describe Brahman cattle as more intuitive and sensitive than other breeds, they also have a protective, aggressive side. You won’t want to get between a Brahman mother and her calf.
Brahmans’ maternal characteristics also include faster breeding and more fertility longevity than other breeds.
Strong Genetics
As they offer great performance and growth, Brahmans play a significant role in crossbreeding programs internationally. Many call this breed the “Crossbreeding’s Common Denominator,” as breeders around the world idolize the American Brahman genetics.
Female Brahmans have a higher milk production rate, wean their calves faster, and have a higher fertility rate than other breeds. Meanwhile, the steers usually stay healthier longer and produce carcasses that are free of excessive fat content, which is ideal for healthier consumers and buyers.
What are Disadvantages of Brahman Cattle?
No breed is perfect, and Brahmans have a couple potential challenges to watch out for.
Despite their extreme heat tolerance, Brahmans don’t like the cold as much. This breed tends to struggle more when temperatures drop. Depending on what area of Texas you’re in, this could be something to watch out for.
Brahman heifers also sometimes take longer to get to their breeding age compared to other breeds. However, Brahmans’ reproductive longevity usually makes up for this.
How Much Do Brahman Cattle Cost?
Like with any breed, prices can range a lot for Brahman cattle. But in general, you could expect to pay $5,000 to $15,000, with some top performers even surpassing $20,000 or more.
